This early CRNW map detail shows the military telegraph route to Eagle on the Yukon River, from there one had to take a paddle wheel to Dawson City. The start of the telegraph line was Valdez. As you can see, it was still a considerable distance to Dawson even after one had reached Copper Center (not viewable because of lines in the way but just below Tazlina on this map).
